Valleyview Towers issues go straight to premier

It was addressed to Premier Moe as well as ministers Lori Carr, Paul Merriman and Everett Hindley, and to a number of media organizations including the News-Optimist. The correspondence is the latest in a long-running letter-writing campaign by Valleyview Towers residents calling for changes to management at Battlefords Housing Authority over various security, crime, disorderly conduct and now smoking problems at the housing complex. In his letter to the premier dated June 11, Mills alleges a “deplorable lack of competent professional management and leadership that has overtaken the entire housing authority.” Mills stated the Valleyview Tower II building of 89 units now has more than 50 vacant suites and that a large number of the empty suites are currently not inhabitable.

No smoking? No, no sitting

I guess they found some cigarette butts on the sidewalk in front of the main doors to our building. This led them to take the chairs away from the non-smoking area by the front door. They must be thinking – or hoping – that will stop the smoking; think again. The smokers have no problem standing to smoke. Taking the chairs away from the non-smokers won’t stop the smokers from smoking but now there’s nowhere for the non-smokers to sit and enjoy the sun and fresh air. Figure that one out. We are lucky management here is not in charge of enforcing speed limits in the city. Using their logic, they would surely decide to close all the streets to everyone just to stop the speeders.

Valleyview tenant wants city councillors on housing board

In three short years this property has gone from being a fully occupied happy, vibrant senior’s facility to being an over half-empty flop house with tenants of all ages. What an accomplishment! Since coming to this facility in December, Steven Ladwig has single-handedly cleaned up most of the problems in this building. I say single-handedly because I know the challenge he has had with Housing Authority management to get them to take action. We now learn that this past week the CSI contract was terminated and an out-of-town firm has been brought in to take their place. I hope Mayor Gillan of North Battleford is now looking into the matter. Hopefully he is much more committed to and successful in cleaning up problems here than all the other officials that have failed. Maybe a good start would be for the mayor to push Minister Carr to appoint a couple of city councillors to the Housing Authority Board.
