Ryan FinnertyChamplain Valley hospitals announce more than $11 million in losses over 6 months
Hospitals in Plattsburgh and Malone announced substantial financial losses since October, citing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
While it might seem strange for a healthcare facility to lose money during a national medical emergency, that is exactly what has happened at hospitals around the country and here in the North Country.
The reason is that Americans have been using less healthcare.
Staying at home orders meant fewer accidental injuries and concerns about contracting an infectious disease resulted in fewer elective procedures being scheduled.

Dec 17, 2020 Earlier this week, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the Champlain Valley Physicians’ Hospital (CVPH) would become the coordinating hub for the North Country’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign.
Dr. Wouter Rietsema said Thursday that the number of calls the hospital received after Cuomo’s announcement indicates high public anticipation of COVID-19 vaccines. Apparently we were inundated with phone calls this morning [from] patients wanting to get vaccine or wanting to know where to go to get vaccine, or wanting to get on waiting lists for vaccine, he said.

Governor Andrew Cuomo sketched out more details Wednesday for how New Yorkers will get the coronavirus vaccine. At his daily briefing, Cuomo said the vaccine will be free to all, with health insurers absorbing the costs.
He said the state has assigned a hospital to be the vaccination hub coordinator for each region. In the North Country, that’s Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, or CVPH, in Plattsburgh. These hub coordinators will all coordinate with the local stakeholders, Cuomo said. They will work with the city government. They will work with the county government. They’ll work with community-based organizations to outreach to communities that are hard to reach. But they’ll come up with a plan that meets the needs of that region. You’re dealing with the North Country, that’s different than the needs of New York City.
