PORTSMOUTH To avoid potential confusion with a new suicide hotline number, Granite Staters will have to start using the 603 area code for all their telephone calls.
That will change on Oct. 25 in New Hampshire. Why? The new National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will be 988. And 988 is an exchange in Portsmouth.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last summer designated 988 as the national three-digit number for people in crisis of potentially harming and killing themselves.
At issue is the fact that residents and businesses in Portsmouth have telephone numbers beginning with 988, according to the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission.

Gov. Chris Sununu doubled down on his prediction for a big summer and said that virtually all of the his coronavirus restrictions will be lifted way before Memorial Day.
During the Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth s virtual State of the State on Wednesday Sununu was extremely optimistic that the mandates and restrictions will be lifted soon very soon including the mask mandate. He said that universal guidelines would become universal best practices which will allow the flexibility to continue social distance practices but it won t be mandated by the government.
He understands that lifting the restrictions puts a new burden on municipalities, business and retail to enforce their own mask mandate without the backing of a government order although the state will still encourage mask wearing
PORTSMOUTH – Gov. Chris Sununu said the state’s mask mandate “will be ending very, very, very, very soon.”
“We’re there, we’re really there. I can’t tell you exactly what date it’s going to be but … I think the term we use in New Hampshire is wicked soon, wicked soon,” Sununu said in response to a question during the Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth Bank of America virtual State of the State event Wednesday morning.
Later in the event, Valerie Rochon, the chief collaborator for the group, asked Sununu “what restrictions are you looking at lifting?” by Memorial Day in terms of coronavirus pandemic rules.
