good evening, everyone. i am valerie paley. i am director of the center for women s history, and i and so delighted to welcome you to the york the new york historical society and women s center. we are the first such center within the walls of a major museum in the united states, and it s about time. rider university provided the video. welcome everyone. this is for the people who are here for the first time tonight data the making of the presidents: 2020, better known as a political circus of the century. i m going to be talking about two different, and yet related topics. the first has to do with the factors that are considered when we look at presidential effectiveness. the second part i d like to look at, a few of the more recent presidential elections. so, we re going to start with this. and i m coming on the work of professor robert dallek, well-known presidential historian. dallek writes, the 20th century saw an impressive expansion of presidential powers, due to the leadership skills of nine men who served in the office theodore roosevelt, woodrow wilson, franklin delano roosevelt, harry s truman, dwight d eisenhower, john f. kennedy, lyndon baines johnson, richard nixon, and ronald reagan. now, professor dalle s analysis only looks at the 20th century. i
