Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said she made the difficult decision, balancing the need to keep searching for victims and investigate the collapse with the need to protect rescue workers and area residents from further harm if the building were to fall. Rescue crews kept tunneling into the rubble of a collapsed condo tower Monday, in their fifth day of trying to find survivors at a site where no one has been found alive since Thursday. There have been occasional tapping sounds and other potential signs of life, officials said, but they have tapered off. There are 11 people confirmed dead, eight of whom have been identified. There are 150 unaccounted for in the collapse. “Please Don’t Give Up,” read one handwritten sign affixed to a roadblock barrier near the site. Candles, flowers and photos of the missing were lined up along the edge of a tennis court that is now temporarily occupied by search-and-rescue officials.

The National Center for Education Statistics estimated that 3.7 million 5-year-olds were expected to attend kindergarten in fall 2020. It’s possible that 450,000 5-year-olds had no exposure at all to kindergarten this school year, reports Valerie Bauerlein for the Wall Street Journal. A third of the students who did enroll in kindergarten attended in person full time, according to th
