Six takeaways from the intriguing play-offs

Six takeaways from the intriguing play-offs EHF / Adrian Costeiu15 March 2021, 10:30 Share URL via E-Mail Copy URL to clipboard Over the last two weeks, the 14 games in the DELO EHF Champions League play-offs delivered clear wins for the favourites but also nail-biting games, where the winners were only decided in the dying seconds of the second leg. Ultimately, eight teams have progressed to the quarter-final, which will be played in the first two weeks of April, the last stop before the DELO EHF FINAL4 in Budapest on 29/30 May. Before we turn our attention to the quarter-final, let’s summarise what piqued our interest the most during the play-offs.

The Romanian "Clasico"

The Romanian “Clasico” Share URL via E-Mail Copy URL to clipboard When arch-rivals meet in Spain, the game is dubbed “El Clasico” — a classic for both the fans to enjoy and where the players draw extra motivation. This week’s “El Clasico” will not be played in Spain but in Ramnicu Valcea — a town that was the epicentre of women’s handball in Romania for nearly 30 years. Between 2014 and 2019, the self-made Romanian capital of handball did not have a team in the DELO EHF Champions League, but SCM came back roaring as they aimed to return to the spotlight. They did that, winning the Romanian league after pipping CSM Bucuresti in 2019. Now, the rivalry from the domestic league and Cups is moving into the premium European competition.
