LOS ANGELES, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) Two randomized, placebo-controlled trials evaluating three Ebola vaccine administration strategies in adults and children found
vaccines are literally around the corner in a month or two. it s going to take years to develop in an incremental fashion. some of these are already in phase 1 clinical trials. don t forget, however, that our current vaccine regimens do provide strong protection. this also comes as nearly 2,300 americans are dying from covid every day. this is the highest 7-day average of that since last february. joining me now is dr. paul offit. he s a member of the vaccine advisory committee and so much more. dr. offit, what do you think about what fauci is saying about this universal coronavirus vaccine? is one needed? well, i think the last thing he said was most important, which is, when you think about it, and it s amazing, is when these vaccines were made, whichever vaccine, moderna, pfizer, j&j, they were all made against the original strain, the
third dose in children under the age of 5. however, i think they re looking at how do you balance getting kids vaccinated sooner. we know it s safe and effective in that age group, and i think this is something of a compromise that lets the kids in the 2 to 5 group get started on their vaccine regimens while waiting for authorization of the third dose. some parents are saying i m not comfortable with that, the idea you re waiting to see if three doses work. a lot of parents out there from 5 to 11 aren t getting their kids the shot. what would you suggest to parents looking at this saying i might hold off? what we know is the two doses are safe for the entire age range. the question is, are two doses enough protection versus three?
unfortunately, looked like the decrease dose decreased the effectiveness which is why they need three shots instead of two. it shows they are taking the science seriously and making sure when parents have the option go and show up and get shots in arms that parents can do so with confidence. i really appreciate that because it bears repeating that vaccines are three shot. it s not just the one and done. that s what we re anticipating here as well. that s exactly right. the vast majority of vaccine regimens are more than one. kids first flu shots are two shots. not the single shot. tetanus, measles, chickenpox. name the vaccine and it s more than one over multiple periods of time. month, years, depending on the vaccine.
needed to deal with omicron. that s one of the things they have been gauging. so the vaccine regimens that are currently available, they find to be effective. they re also talking about boosters being a useful tool. so expect the president to advocate for more of that. the white house has been saying that while certainly they would like more people to get their first doses of that kind of part of the population that has not gotten vaccinated at all, they re pleased that there s been a million booster shots being administered a day. they like that pace, they want it to continue, especially with the omicron variant here. and the importance of wearing the masks as much as people have grown tired of doing that, doing that indoors in those congregant settings as another way of dealing with this variant. knowing as you re conversation with dr. gupta was dealing with the fact that breakthrough cases will be taking place. obviously those unvaccinated are the greatest risk. those who have been
