Severely obese eligible for COVID-19 vaccine, people who are overweight can still qualify for vaccine
KFSN
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) Starting this week, people with conditions that put them at the highest risk from COVID-19 can now get the vaccine. Health conditions include people who are severely obese, which the state defines as a person with a body mass index of 40 or higher.
The city of San Francisco, however, decided to loosen the criteria, allowing anyone with a BMI of 30 or above to get vaccinated.
Across the Central Valley, more than 35% of adults are considered obese.
County health officials said despite that number, they do not plan to adjust the state s requirements, but if you think you re at-risk of becoming extremely sick from COVID-19, there is still a way you can qualify for the vaccine now.

By Friday, about 80,000 first doses and 20,000 second doses had been administered. It s a phenomenal time right now because we hit our first 100,000 doses in Fresno County, says Community Health Division Manager Joe Prado. Definitely a high clap for that because this is what Fresno County can do when we all come together through all of our partnerships and collaboration.
This week, county public health officials say they received 19,000 vaccines instead of their usual 8,000.
Next week, the allotment is expected to be 18,000 doses.
The health department says come March, it ll still be making headway in the Phase 1B category. That category includes seniors, educators, emergency, grocery, and agriculture workers.

Now, county supervisors are asking the state to make sure the local population gets its fair share of vaccines.
The state announced a plan Tuesday to streamline vaccine deliveries, and the woman in charge of the new effort says she ll address the shortage here in Fresno.
