winner this hour on cnn. good morning and welcome to early start, i m sor ride da sam lynn. i m ashley banfield. we re bringing you the news from a to z. it s 5:00 a.m. in the east. we begin this morning with breaking news. we re just learning brand new information on that nigerian plane that crashed into a residential neighborhood in lagos. the airline s director of flight operations confirming the pilot was american. we have no idea how long that pilot worked for the airline. nigeria s president declaring three days of national mourning and ordering a full investigation. all 153 people on board were killed in yesterday s disaster, and at least ten people on the ground died as well. firefighters and police struggled to put out all of the flames. there wasn t any water left more than three hours after that crash. residents helped carry fire hoses and plastic buckets of water to the burning wreckage. into s going to be a rough day pretty much in the financial markets a
it didn t get it all stopped, but it did a decent enough job for the time it was in place. it will now be coming back to the surface. jen right now along the arizona/utah border, a massive manhunt for a suspect who shot and killed a sheriff s deputy during a foot chase. harris is following the details. what do we know about this guy? reporter: i tell you what, all of the corner of utah and arizona are on alert right now. there are about 100 police officers and other members of law enforcement and the national park service in on this manhunt for 23-year-old scott curly. he had been targeting schools in the area of furdonia, utah, and they couldn t really figure out if they had a real bad guy on their hands or what because he was stealing things like bags of doritos and things like that. one of the schools that he hit, apparently he pulled a gun according to police officers on the custodian there, and that s when the manhunt started.
in fact, the governor even issued a statement a short while ago, governor gary herbert from salt lake city said the cain county sheriff s department deputy was shot and killed while pursuing an armed suspect putting himself in a dangerous situation to protect his community. he speaks on behalf of his wife, jeanette and i extend our deepest condolences to deputy harris wife, children, his entire family, friends and all the members of the cain county sheriff s office. just speaking to the level that this guy had given his life and dedication there to the state of utah. very, very big loss for them. jenna: yeah, sounds like it, harris. we ll keep everyone updated on that story. jon: and jenna, we have some incredible brand new pictures of those 33 miners trapped, now, three weeks in a mine in chile deep underground. this very latest footage thanks to a camera that yes, rescue crs lowered showing the miners in
south of the utah border, and the suspect shot the officer with a high powered rifle. he is 5 7 , 170, brown hair and brown eyes and this is live from phoenix, as the marshall is assisting in the investigation. thank you, sir. gets guess pleasure to be here. shepard: there was a chase of some kind and the suspect had a weapon? guest: yes, he is well-known to the police officers both in utah and arizona border. he was a suspect in a series of burglaries and the night before he confronted an individual with a weapon. and yesterday afternoon a sheriff deputy and other police officers observed him, were tracking him through the desert there and there was a shootout and unfortunately, the deputy from kane county was shot and killed.
