that one minute goes by really fast. there are two ways to run scared and unopposed. i m not unopposed. so we re going to compete hard. to those of you who are not supportive yet, you ll get there. and we ll continue to work to make sure you get there. i hear they re all going after me. whatever. whatever. get ready for rumble. the stage is set for wednesday night s cnn republican presidential debate. while most of the candidates spent the day preparing, front-runner, donald trump, was on the campaign trail just a few hours ago aboard the world war ii battleship, the u.s.s. iowa. trump delivered what he called a major policy speech on national security. it was over just 15 minutes with few specifics on defense or foreign policy. but there was a lot of bluster.
have to tell people who you are, what you stand for and how you re different from donald trump. and land a line that will be memorable. exactly. and you ve got ten minutes to do it. my guess is every single one of them gets up there and jots notes down to themselves when they get to those podiums to remind them of the lines that they want to hit and the moments they want to create. as you know, john, tens of millions of people presumably will be watching the debate tonight. but really at stake in iowa and new hampshire are tens of thousands of people who will actually show up at the caucuses and polling booth. i think because we re so involved and so much drama and a field we ve never seen, i think we sometimes forget this is the second debate. yes, candidates are spending a lot of time in iowa and new hampshire, four months until anybody votes. this is a still getting to know you phase. it s not an introduction but still getting to know you phase. they know trump because of
national security. he they are drawing protesters. sara sidner is with them. she joins us right now. what s the scene outside? reporter: i ll tell you, there is about 250 people, walking through the crowds, lots of different signs, anderson, behind me i ll flip you around. that is the uss iowa there. on the back of the uss iowa, trump is speaking. about a,000 people expected to attend the trump event. down here, these aren t folks who have tickets. they are angry with trump. they have all sorts of signs, this one here says i m maddon alleged trump and you got other ones where you have lots of children here saying we re not illegals. there was a fight earlier between supporters and folks who want trump out, speaking don t trump at him. certainly, they re a very, very vocal crowd here tonight trying to get trump to hear their message while he tries to give his message to the crowd that s here to see him.
speech last night and expecting the opportunity to speak with donald trump afterwards. he gave no media availability, right? reporter: no media availability. the reporters were trying to follow him off the deck of the uss iowa, but the protestors were being really loud and he declined to comment on them. but so far that foreign policy speech that he kept saying he s going to give, we are still waiting for it. and we ll see if he gives any details out tonight. if he does give a lot of details, he opens himself up for criticism. so maybe a few more details but not heavy into the details as many might hope he gets into. we shall be watching. katy tur, thank you so much. joining us now, former republican senator and former governor of new hampshire, judd greg. sir, great to have you with me. explain what you anticipate to see tonight. do you expect a ferocious fight? ferocious might be too strong a term, but there s going to be a lot of good theater because donald trump brings good
caustic and uncomfortable even when these candidates go after each other on a smaller setting. no question about. that look, they have to walk that fine line trying to out reagan one another at the same time charting their on pass. stick around. more with you in just a moment. just a few hours ago, donald trump finished up his final free debate appearance. he was on board a battleship with actual cannons to go along with the verbal plasts we often see from him. this was billed as a national security speech. he did promise in his words to make our military so big, so strong, so great. but le quickly turned the discussion to immigration. cnn sarah murray was there. she has the very latest. sarah. reporter: good morning, christine and john, donald trump did his version of the debate back here on board the uss iowa in los angeles, delivering a speech billed as a national security address. it was very light on specifics. the problem we have is that the leaders of mexico, japan,
