which is interesting. you mentioned his base. is that all about his supporters? the president just afraid they will leave him if he doesn t construct this wall? or is this really about winning? it s also about fighting congress. he has looked to congress for funds for months. but now that it is a divided congress, with the democrats controlling the house and the republicans controlling the senate, very little is expected to get done other than maybe the usmca deal. but a border discussion seems to be far away when you talk to most top people on capitol hill on both parties. you see this administration scrambling. you say he is scrambling also with congress. but there is another piece i want to focus on, one that says administration officials have stopped trying to talk him out of demands and the u.s. army core of engineers is instructed
changes the entire dynamic. right. you could envisage, for example, the china deal late this year or early next year that could have attached to it could be any number of major purchases including major agricultural personages. you could see things like that, you could see usmca deal potentially get approved. there are things there, all of them have great challenges. it s not like any of these are givens, but yes, there are certain things the president hopes will happen steam like the economy leading to the election. bret: all right, panel, thank you very much. i m all over. when we come back, some late night reaction to the democrat debates. with my hepatitis c, i felt i couldn t be at my best for my family. in only 8 weeks with mavyret, i was cured and left those doubts behind. i faced reminders of my hep c every day.
talk about this on tv all day but people want to know you are a guy who in your previous life was a free trader. i still am, yeah. is that part of the thing that the president sort of is doubling down on tariffs and it s not really something you believe in? no, it s absolutely not related at all. in fact, i think that, you know, the president has pursued a trade reform agenda, you and i have talked about it, and i think that the proof is in the pudding for some of the deals, the korea deal is a lot better, the usmca deal, the nafta deal is a lot better. so the president he is a tough negotiator and takes tough stance and puts a lot of pressure on people he is negotiating in but in the end his objectives and mine are the same and that s trade reform. what s going on with the ten year treasuries? what s happening in the bond market right now? it s difficult to say because ten year treasuries normally would move the way we re seeing if there was an expectation of significant wea
chuck grassley said he would not move forward with approving the deal until the administration agreed to lift those tariffs from canada and mexico. and the same was said in canada and mexico. in order for that deal to go through, they needed it to be ratified not only here in the united states but canada and mexico and up until this moment, president trump had said that he would be unwilling to do that. still calling it a national security issue. tell us about other companies, what they re saying the impact of the pending trade war is? reporter: let s go back to last week. we were in indiana over at the largest diesel engine maker in the world. not only when it came to the tariffs were they being impacted by specific pieces of engine parts, but that double whammy effect when it came to the steel
unaware. they slipped this thing in under the radar and off it went. it was those actions over the course of that week was part of gary cohn that week. there were valid questions as to why it s happening with the united states and mexico and still not europe where it all started. is there some sense that this now paves the way for canada in particular and mexico to get on board with work that is trying to be done with china in terms of settling that matter? potentially. and one of the things that could be part of this deal is an agreement by canada and mexico to limit the steel and aluminum that is coming into their countries from china that then is making its way into the united states. that is a problem that president trump has said is creating the oversupply, is killing the american jobs here. and that s something that they really wanted to eliminate with these tariffs in the first place. there could be a deal on that.
