対象年齢はファイザー製は12歳以上、モデルナ製は18歳以上だ。このため、12～17歳の人が接種できるのは、現状ではファイザー製のみとなる。
接種間隔はファイザー製は3週間、モデルナ製は4週間だ。大規模治験では、発症予防効果について、ファイザー製は2回目の接種から1週間目以降、モデルナ製は同2週間目以降で評価し、いずれも95%ほどの効果が確認された。効果の持続期間は明らかではないが、2回目の接種後の観察期間を半年まで延ばしても90%ほどの効果だった。
二つのワクチンの効果を大きく下げてしまうような変異株は、いまのところ見つかっていない。
