When authorities arrived, they discovered three burlap sacks filled with 70 bundles of cocaine inside a BMW SUV.

A federal grand jury charged Jesus Martinez-Villela, 23, with conspiracy to transport 12 undocumented citizens resulting in death. He is expected to appear for his arraignment before a U.S. magistrate judge in Laredo in the near future.

Affidavit: Man in need of money arrested for smuggling immigrants April 19, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail A man decided to smuggle immigrants because he needed money, states an arrest affidavit. At about 6 p.m. April 15, a U.S. Border Patrol agent observed a white Cadillac Escalade near the intersection of U.S. 83 and Texas 44. The vehicle was at a distance on the side of the road with its hazard lights on. Authorities said the vehicle was positioned on U.S. 83 on the shoulder of the southbound lane facing Texas 44. “This rural area is commonly used by (human) smuggling organizations as they are aware of the limited law enforcement presence in the area. This area is also commonly used to load up illegal (immigrants) once they have circumvented immigration checkpoints, thus facilitating their furtherance into the United States,” states the affidavit.
