Man convicted of murder, sentenced to life in German synagogue attack

© Getty A German court on Monday convicted a 28-year-old man of murder and attempted murder for a 2019 attack on a Halle synagogue and sentenced him to life in prison. Stephan Balliet, a far-right extremist, posted an anti-Semitic manifesto before attempting to storm the synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism. Balliet, who livestreamed the attack, was unable to gain entry to the synagogue after firing at the lock on the front door. He went on to shoot and kill a passerby and open fire into an area Turkish kebab shop, killing one customer. He also shot two other people who were injured.

The odds of Washington and Tehran making progress to revive the 2015 nuclear deal before Iran s June elections have dwindled. Throughout the proceedings, Balliet never once showed any remorse for the outrage, described by federal prosecutor Kai Lohse as an attack “on Jewish life in Germany as a whole” that was fueled by the gunman’s “racist, xenophobic and antisemitic ideology.” When the trial began on July 21, Balliet wore a “big grin” as prosecution lawyers replayed the same video that the neo-Nazi had livestreamed during the attack. In testimony, he advanced the conspiracy theory that “Jews were the organizers” of the massive influx of Syrian refugees into Germany in 2015.
