Housing Project Oberzelg / Sintzel Architekten

© Philip Heckhausen For Esch Sintzel, the commission in Sennhof is one of the few that is not about densification, but about new planning on a green field site. Instead of sharpening the existing identity of the site, the aim here is to develop a new - suburban - identity. That is why this project is conceived from the public spaces, and why these public spaces are particularly explicitly designed as urban outdoor spaces that interact as a sequence of squares and alleys. The squares are framed by airy loggias and elevated private gardens to invite individual appropriation and create a festive setting for living together in the settlement.

Guðlaug Baths / BASALT Architects

© Ragnar Th Sigurðsson/Arctic Images Text description provided by the architects. Guðlaug baths rest in the rock barrier of Langisandur Beach, facing the vast North Atlantic Ocean. They are a testament to the positive effect a single architectural intervention can have, as they enable and encourage interaction with the ocean and the elements. Guðlaug is a free entry, democratic, public space, and a community favourite. Guðlaug has also played a role in strengthening the image of the township and attracts scores of visitors from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík (40 min away) as well as tourists, with a positive effect on the local economy.

Kauchuk Residential Towers / Meganom

© Daniel Annenkov Kauchuk s deep facade creates large windows in apartments, keeping the interior safe from the extra sun and prying eyes. The shapes of the towers are designed to create a solid sculpture while their shell remains light and permeable. © Ilya Ivanov The building s cellular structure evokes an object that is rooted in an industrial context while capturing a natural character.
