A national environmental organization s lawsuit against upstate New York scrap metal recycler Ben Weitsman & Son accuses the Owego-based company of failing to take proper steps to prevent polluted stormwater discharge into waterways surrounding its facilities.
Sister companies Upstate Shredding and Ben Weitsman & Son characterizes itself as the largest privately-held scrap metal dealer on the East Coast. The federal lawsuit filed Tuesday by the Sierra Club, a California-based non-profit environmental organization, claims Weitsman facilities consistently reported high pollutant levels in samples of stormwater.
Adam Weitsman, CEO of Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, says environmental standards frequently change year-to-year, and industries like his have to keep in step with the latest requirements. He disputes accusations raised in the lawsuit and says his company has spent recent months taking steps to improve potential stormwater issues.
