History comes to life as pupils at Carlisle s Upperby Junior School learn about the terrors of world war

The trials and tribulations of wartime evacuation were brought to life for more than 80 schoolchildren in 1988. Thirty two children from Carlisle’s Upperby Junior School were sent off by train to Hallbankgate and Gilsland primary schools as part of a living history exercise. The project was organised by lecturers from Ambleside’s Charlotte Mason teacher training college. History lecturers Rob David and Mike Huggins arranged the event as part of a learning exercise for six trainee teachers from the college. The meeting between the evacuees and their hosts was realistic as they stood in a sad, cold huddle at one end of the platform said Gilsland head Richard West. “But when they left all the children were waving and had made friends.”
