Six years ago, when a full moon rose over the fields of Madison, Alabama, a fifth grade student watched it glow from her bedroom window. It was so beautiful, hanging there in the heavens. She took out her notebook, picked up her pen, and wrote down her thoughts.
Those thoughts became a poem, an award-winning one. “Celestial Grace” won first place in the 2015 Huntsville Literary Association’s Young Writers Contest, Upper Elementary Poetry Division.
Aparna Bhooshanan went from being a hesitant writer to a confident one. Along with the other winners that year, her poem was published in the Awards Ceremony booklet and broadcast on WLRH public radio. She also won a cash prize. In the years since, Aparna has won a third place prize as well as an honorable mention.
