Exactly a month ago, the Special Assembly of the ISA had elected Ajay as the Director General. However, the appointment is for four years which could be renewed for an additional term. In a statement, the company says, Dr Ajay Mathur has assumed office, today, as Director General of the International Solar Alliance. Ajay would be replacing Upendra Tripathy, who has completed his term on March 14. Upendra held the position of Director General since 2017. Upendra Tripathy, the outgoing director-general (DG) of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), has played a key role in setting up the first treaty-based international government organization to be based in India. Tripathy, a former secretary in the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE), passes on the baton to Ajay Mathur, who earlier headed the New Delhi-based The Energy and Research Institute. The International Solar Alliance (ISA) plans to launch the World Solar Bank (WSB) at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in November, a top ISA official said, a development that will support India’s attempt to secure leadership in the climate arena. The ISA is the first treaty-based international government organization headquartered in India.
The development assumes significance, given that green finance will be among priority themes at the climate meet called COP-26, which comes in the backdrop of US re-joining the Paris climate accord. The ISA was co-founded by India at the 2015 climate change conference in Paris.

The International Solar Alliance (ISA) has announced the appointment of Ajay Mathur as its new director general following his election at a virtual assembly.
Mathur is currently director general of the Energy and Resources Institute and has previously held senior positions at India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency and the Green Climate Fund. He will start his new role on 15 March, replacing Upendra Tripathy, who has served as ISA director general since its foundation in 2015.
