Vermont Business Magazine The owner of the Brattleboro Reformer, Bennington Banner, Manchester Journal and UpCountry Magazine is selling the properties to a new group formed by Paul Belogour of Guilford, Vermont. The Reformer and Banner are daily newspapers, the Journal is a weekly and UpCountry is a lifestyle magazine that covers the Berkshires and Bennington and Windham counties in Vermont. They were all part of New England Newspapers Inc, which includes the daily Pittsfield (MA) Eagle.
NENI president and publisher Fredric D Rutberg made the announcement today. He said they are holding onto the Eagle as they expand the digital products. All employees will be retained. Financial terms were not disclosed.
In 1933, the North Adams Women s Club opened an exact replica of Fort Massachusetts, which was built on its original site in North Adams with the aid of a WPA grant. Unable to financially sustain the fort as a tourist attraction, the club sold it to private owners in 1945 and it was used in part, as a restaurant.
The buildings eventually fell into disrepair and were torn down piece by piece. In 1973, at the request of Central Markets which owned the land at that time, the remaining building was torn down. The site is now marked by a memorial plaque and the remains of the replica fort s chimney.

Vermont Ski + Ride Magazine has won the top award from the New England Newspaper and Press Association, General Excellence, for specialty publications. The awards were announced at the organization’s annual meeting last Friday. It is the second year in a row the publication has won.
Vermont Ski + Ride was also named the Best Niche Publication in New England by the group, which represents more than 340 newspapers and media outlets in New England’s six states.
General Excellence honors the editorial quality of the publication and considers the strength of the publication’s website, social media and advertising. “It’s a real honor to win this again, especially against such a competitive field of newspapers and magazines,” said editor and co-publisher Lisa Gosselin Lynn.
