The covid19 pandemic has disrupted planning and daytoday operations, but nasa and its commercial partners have achieved many successful outcomes. These include launching american astronauts to the International Space station and returning them safely to earth. Returning that launch vehicle safely to earth. Launching a perseverance rover to mars, and preparing the space launch systems, sls, rocket and orion crew capsule for the first deep Space Exploration Program Mission next year. Im pleased that nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine is here to provide us with an update on nasas missions and programs and the agencys plans for the future. Further progress on the art miss program is critical to achieving the goals of landing the first woman and the next man on the moon by 2024, and establishing a sustainable presence on or around the lunar surface by 2028. Chris is a former staff director for the Senate Armed Services committee an and prior to that e Senior Policy Adviser for senator john mccain and previously held other positions in the government. Right now he is the chief surgeon to build capabilities for the military as well as for the department of homeland security. We can talk about that as we go through the interview. So, just to start off, what led you to do this but i know youve been thinking about these issues for a while and obviously something that you have encountered during your time onn the surface kennedy and senator mccain is the policy adviser. It seems one thing to rely on his Mission Command in such a way they were willing to use their own initiative, tactics that might not ordinarily be what they returned to based on doctor and. The willingness of us leaders to take advantage of their own initiative and ability to improvise could be an advantage where you have to use your own Unmanned Systems to come up with a tactic in the absence of the planning staff or higher direction. Might be a former competitive edge. The challenge is the United States military, we are much better positioned to do that, an adversary that is very topdown, inherent distrust in the lower ranks, 100 advantage we have but that is something we have to relearn after 20 years where we practice a lot of Mission Command in a lot of places the ladies are structured. Both of these were a product of many years i looked at these issues, just thinking about this on a daytoday basis but the first was the growing realization that we had a fundamental problem i felt was underappreciated that people didnt appreciate that we were losing competitive advantage, we werent where we needed to be from a technological standpoint or operational standpoint
