State budget director to leave for University of Michigan post Chris Kolb
The University of Michigan has appointed the state s budget director as its next vice president for government relations.
Chris Kolb will begin the job on Jan. 19, the university announced Friday.
Kolb, 62, takes over for Cynthia Wilbanks, who announced her retirement in July after 22 years as the university s go-to government liaison. Kolb will depart his role with the state as officials grapple with a projected $3.4 billion budget shortfall due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Kolb told Crain s he has offered to remain with the state through Jan. 15 to assist in the transition.

ANN ARBOR, MI The University of Michigan on Friday named Chris Kolb its next vice president of government relations.
Kolb, who currently serves as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s state budget director, has more than 20 years of experience in public service, both in the government and nonprofit sectors, according to a university release. He has also spent three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives, the release states.

Kolb has more than 20 years of experience in public service both in the government and nonprofit sectors, including three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives.
His five-year appointment effective Jan. 19 is authorized by President Mark Schlissel, and follows the recommendation from a national search conducted by a search advisory committee. The appointment will be reported to the Board of Regents at its February meeting.
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Kolb as the vice president for government relations at the University of Michigan,” Schlissel said. “Chris has embraced public service throughout his career, with extensive experience in state and local government, public policy and community relations.”
