Nigerian Electoral Body, Says It Lacks Power To Compel Universities To Close For General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) has said it does not have the power to force tertiary institutions in the country to stop academic activities in order to enable students to vote during the forthcoming general elections. This was made known by the media aide to the chairman of the commission, Rotimi Oyekanmi, in an interview on Friday. Oyekanmi’s remark was towards several pleas from stakeholders that universities should declare holidays for students to collect their Permanent Voter Cards and also vote in the coming polls.

National Assembly Asks Nigerian Universities Commission To Suspend Academic Activities To Allow Students Vote In Elections

The Nigerian National Assembly has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to suspend academic activities in universities nationwide to allow eligible students participate in the 2023 general election. The House of Representatives called on the relevant authorities in the education sector, particularly the National Universities Commission, to cause the suspension of academic activities for the period during plenary on Thursday. The resolution came after the plenary on Thursday considered a motion sponsored by Hon. Kabir Ibrahim.
