BIG PINE KEY â The College of the Florida Keys President Jonathan Gueverra has faced significant challenges since taking the reins at the college nearly a decade ago, but none like what he has faced in the past year with the COVID-19 pandemic.
But Gueverra and college staff have risen to the occasion. The pandemic has not only given the collegeâs nursing students real-life experience, but the college has played an important role in battling the virus locally.
On Sunday, Feb. 7, more than 400 people were vaccinated at the college by 38 nursing students and seven college staff, as CFK hosted the first mass vaccination event in the Keys. The college partnered with the local offices of the Florida Department of Health on the project. Another 300 vaccinations were planned for this past Sunday.

Frank J. Flagella, 74, of Fredonia, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at Brooks Memorial Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. He was born on March 1, 1946, in Dunkirk, N.Y., the son of the late Frank and Mildred (Ceranowicz) Flagella.
Frank was a graduate from Cassadaga High School in 1964 and The State University of New York at Canton in 1968. He joined the U.S. Army upon graduating from SUNY Canton in 1968 and received an honorable discharge in 1974. He was hired in 1975 to work for the Village of Fredonia Waste Water Treatment Plant in the maintenance department. Upon completion of his New York State Waste Water Operator Certification, Frank was promoted to the Chief Operator’s Position in 1985 where he remained until his retirement in 2009.
