Vasquez Heilig Represents UK College of Education on Justice, Equity Initiative

(Dec. 18, 2020)  University of Kentucky College of Education Dean Julian Vasquez Heilig has been named a member of the steering committee for Education Deans for Justice and Equity (EDJE)   a growing alliance of deans of colleges and schools of education across the country.  The group was formed in 2016 to help college leaders address inequities and injustices in education through policy, research and practice. December Grads Include 3 Uniquely Trained to Help Special Education Students With Communication Needs

(Dec. 17, 2020)  Among December’s University of Kentucky College of Education graduates are three students who completed a program uniquely preparing school personnel who work with students with moderate and severe disabilities.   Though not typically trained together, a grant UK received from the U.S. Department of Education allows teachers in the special education field to study in a combined master’s level program with speech-language pathology students. This month’s graduates were in the first cohort of special education students accepted into the master’s program, known as the Special Education and Communication-Interdisciplinary Training (SPEAC-IT) grant.  

UK Doctoral Student Selected for Jackson Scholars Network

Rasheed Flowers, a University of Kentucky College of Education doctoral student, has been selected to participate in the University Council for Education Administration’s Barbara L. Jackson Scholars Network. LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 15, 2020)  Rasheed Flowers, a University of Kentucky College of Education doctoral student, has been selected to participate in the University Council for Education Administration’s (UCEA) Barbara L. Jackson Scholars Network.   The Jackson Scholars program was created to provide a support system for graduate students of color and to help increase the number of students of color poised to serve as faculty at higher education institutions that prepare educational leaders for the nation’s schools and children. 

UK Education Alumna s Star-studded Classroom Brightens Zoom Sessions for High Schoolers

(Dec. 11, 2020)  A school year like no other became the perfect chance for Whitney Walker to take her social studies classroom to the next level at Lafayette High School in Lexington.  Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Walker’s classroom had been a marvel. Nearly every inch was covered with souvenirs, maps, retro toys, puppets, folk art, kitsch and political signage from both sides of the aisle. Life-size cut outs of presidents and celebrities like Taylor Swift, George Washington, Marilyn Monroe and Jar Jar Binks lined the walls. Flags and campaign signs adorned the ceiling.
