Featuring works with Earth-related themes, the program includes a performance of Julie Giroux’s newest work, Symphony No. IV, "The Blue Marble," an immersive film and symphonic experience inspired by the famous photograph of the same name, captured in 1972 by the crew of the Apollo 17 mission while in transit to the Moon.
The 2023 George Boulden Honor Band Festival Weekend will feature a public performance from the UK Wind Symphony, presenting John Mackey’s Wine-Dark Sea Symphony for Band, the following evening at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Singletary Center for the Arts. The annual Honor Band Weekend showcases the region's best young talent in two ensemble bands the audition-only Wind Ensemble and the Concert Band which is open to freshmen and sophomore high school students by director recommendation.
Shayna Stahl will be the first woman director of UK Athletic Bands.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 7, 2021) The University of Kentucky welcomes Shayna Stahl as director of Athletic Bands and assistant director of Bands in the School of Music. Stahl will become the first woman to serve as the director of the Wildcat Marching Band. Stahl will also serve as director of the UK Pep Bands and as the conductor of the UK Concert Band.
“I am very pleased that Dr. Stahl will be joining us at the UK School of Music this summer,” said Stan Pelkey, director of the UK School of Music. “Dr. Stahl is an experienced director of athletic bands who has worked with Division I athletic bands for the past 15 years. She will be ready from her first day on campus to guide the Wildcat Marching Band toward a successful fall season.
