Iceland hit by 17,000 earthquakes in the past week, officials warn an eruption could be imminent Updated Mar 05, 2021; Facebook Share During the past week, the Icelandic Meteorological Office has recorded around 17,000 earthquakes on the volcanic island, according to reports. A CNN report said that, although accustomed to the occasional tremor, this has been an unusual week for Iceland, centered in the southwestern region of Reykjanes. On the morning of February 24, the largest and loudest quake occurred, a magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale, CNN reported. That quake was followed by “a swarm that continues to rattle residents in the nearby capital city of Reykjavík” and surrounding municipalities, an area occupied by two-thirds of the Icelandic population. Two larger earthquakes hit, measuring more than magnitude 5.0, on Feb. 27 and March 1.

What officials expect after Iceland records 17,000 earthquakes in a week

Last Updated: What Officials Expect After Iceland Records 17,000 Earthquakes In A Week Iceland has witnessed unusually high seismic activity as Icelandic Meteorological Office noted, nearly 17,000 earthquakes have hit the southwestern region. Iceland has witnessed an unusually high seismic activity and the Icelandic Meteorological Office has noted that nearly 17,000 earthquakes have hit the southwestern region of Reykjanes over the past week. Iceland sits on a tectonic plate boundary that continually splits apart and it also pushed North America and Eurasia away from each other along the line of Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Hence, occasional stronger tremors are an inevitable part of living in an active seismic region but this time there appears to be a rumble under the ground. As per a CNN report, since there are multiple volcanoes in the area, local officials have warned that an eruption could be imminent.
