Elon University in North Carolina has canceled an event for White people to process their complicity in injustice, because the meeting would exclude other races, the school told Fox News.
Young America s Foundation Tuesday revealed the White caucus event, publishing an email that specified the event was intended for white and White-identifying individuals to speak openly and avoid retraumatiz[ing] people of color. White caucuses give white people a space to learn about and process their awareness of and complicity in unjust systems without harming their friends of color, reads the email, which was addressed to School of Education students.
The White Caucus event at Elon University slated for next week, was intended to allow white allies to speak openly about systemic oppression without re-traumatizing people of color .
But the event slated for next week has since been canceled after the conservative Young America’s Foundation called it a “segregated” event and students of color complained, Fox News reported.
“Racially segregating conversations meant to improve race relations and build community will only create more division,” YAF’s Kara Zupkus wrote in an article.
Jon Seaton, an Elon freshman who is Black, called the White Caucus a “horrible idea.”
“There’s no way you can get anything done on the issue,” he told Elon News Network. “If you’re going to exclude the people who the issues are about out of the conversation, that’s counterintuitive. There’s just no positive outcome that comes from that.”
