The great composer and prophet Hannibal Lokumbe has been moved oratorio in tribute to a crucial event in our national history. Dr. Kim phuc, who is here today, was the young girl in vietnam in 1972 who was pictured running down the street after a napalm attack. That photograph so transfixed the world that it helped lead to an end to the vietnam war. And dr. Phuc has gone on to a distinguished career, advocating for children who are the victims of war and in recognition of her extraordinary achievements, she was honored earlier this year with the dresden peace prize, one of the most important in the world. George thanks for having me. Steve you have devoted a considerable amount of time studying medicare and medicaid. Legislation was signed into law in 1965 by lyndon johnson. Part of the Great Society program. Take us back to that time. And how this legislation was significant at the time and how it has evolved in the last 50 plus years. George thats a great question to start off with. Medicare and medicaid passed in july, 1965. Medicaid was really an afterthought in the legislative drafting process. The laws ratification shortly after the assassination of president john f. Kennedy meant that there was a greater focus on the medicare law and there were certain historical reasons for this. Medicare began and grew out in 1960 which also grew out of the medical aid for a program, which was a new deal era program that began in the 40s and 50s. Are traveling so fast. The fact i get to see this every , i have to take it in and make sure i appreciate getting to be here every day. The canyon has been forming for about one million years or so. The bulk of the formation has happened in the last 100,000 years. It runs from here close to the town of silverton. You can make a really good case the canyon is at least 80 miles in length. The river is probably more like 120 miles. It is the second largest canyon in the United States after the grand. It is not a single canyon. There are many canyons that branch off to the side. We can see three canyons from where we are at right now. It is a much bigger system than people realize even with a brief visit to the state park. I grew up in amarillo. As a young kid, i remember coming out in elementary school. And after that, as soon as i got my drivers license, i was driving out here bringing friends. We would explore some of the caves.
