Takes American History tv on the road to feature the history of cities across america. Here is a recent program. Are on the campus of university of North Carolina on chapel hill. Both schools have a good claim to make. University of georgia was first. Ed they received their charter in 1785. The unc charter came a few years later, but unc was first open. The university and the city were founded at the same time. ,hen this city was selected there was no town or village. There were a few neighboring farms. There was an anglican chapel. There was no town to speak of. On the day they laid the cornerstone for the First University building, they had an auction of town lots. They understood that if the university was going to succeed, they needed to be a town around to support it, so really the town and university were born on the same day. University was chartered in 1789. The ground broke for the first building in 1793. A year and a half later, they held an opening ceremony. Events on campus

It took another few weeks before the First Student arrived. He came 100 miles off the coast of North Carolina. He was the entire student body for about two weeks before more students drifted onto campus. For the first century, it was a school for white men only. It was only in the 1890s that women were admitted to the university, and the university did not

Air force plays] [marines hymn plays] [applause] as you were downstairs getting ready to start the ceremony, captain yellen was asking if i stand for the army or if i stand for the air force, because he was in both appeared and i said sir, you are 93 years old. You can stand for anybody that you want to. [applause] captain jerry yellin is an Army Air Forces veteran who served in world war ii between 1941 in 1945. He enlisted on his 18th birthday, just two months after the bombing of pearl harbor. After graduating as a Fighter Pilot in august of at the ripe old age of 19, he spent the remainder of the war flying combat missions in the pacific with the 78 fighter squadron. 78th fighter squadron. He participated in the first landbased fighter mission over japan on april 7, 1945. Has the unique distinction of having flown the final combat mission of world war ii on august 14, 1945, the date combat ended. On that mission,
