Veteran politician Frank Field was elected MP for Birkenhead in 1979. He served as Minister for Welfare Reform in Tony Blair’s first cabinet, led the campaign against the removal of the 10p rate of tax and was appointed Chair of the Independent Review on Poverty and Life Chances. He is a climate change campaigner and serves as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the University Academy of Birkenhead. In August 2018 he resigned the Labour whip over concerns around antisemitism, shortly after losing a confidence vote in his constituency over Brexit. He will stand as an independent in the General Election
