The effects of global warming and the resulting disruptions in climate are more worrisome every year: longer and deadlier heat waves, more devastating forest fires, more frequent heavy rains and floods, and so on. The seriousness of these developments has been abundantly described in the media; our focus here will be on the time scale for mitigating these effects.
