OHCHR | Mauritania s human rights record to be examined by Universal Periodic Review

GENEVA (14 January 2021) – Mauritania’s human rights record will be examined by the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group for the third time on Tuesday, 19 January 2021 in a meeting that will be webcast live. Mauritania is one of the 14 States to be reviewed by the UPR Working Group during its upcoming session taking place from 18 to 29 January .  Mauritania’s first and second UPR reviews took place in November 2010 and November 2015, respectively. The documents on which the reviews are based are: 1) national report - information provided by the State under review; 2) information contained in the reports of independent human rights experts and groups, known as the Special Procedures, human rights treaty bodies, and other UN entities; 3) information provided by other stakeholders including national human rights institutions, regional organizations and civil society groups.

New Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka Presents Credentials (Based on information provided by the Protocol and Liaison Service) The new Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, Mohan Pieris, presented his credentials to the Secretariat today. Before his latest appointment, Mr. Pieris had an active legal practice in Sri Lanka and worked as a professor and lecturer at various universities since 2015, including the National Law University of Delhi, Rajiv Gandhi National Law University in Patiala and the National Law University of Advanced Legal Studies of Kochi. Earlier in his career, he served as Chief Justice of Sri Lanka s Supreme Court from 2013 to 2015. He was appointed Chairman of the Seylan Bank PLC in 2011 and also served as a Senior Legal Advisor to the Cabinet Ministries in Sri Lanka during that time.
