NEW BEDFORD Buttonwood Park Zoo announced in a news release that one of its male Canada lynx has died.
Calgary, at 20 years and seven months, was recognized as the oldest Canada lynx living at an Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited facility – and the second longest lived lynx in the historical population, the release said.
Calgary had been at the zoo since 2009.
Calgary’s advanced age meant that he required extremely specialized care that included differentiated diets, additional health screenings and routine medications, the release said.
Dr. Erica Lipanovich, the zoo s staff veterinarian, examined Calgary the day after Christmas after his caretakers noticed a lack of stability in his back legs and reported that he was not interested in offered food. “During his examination it was determined that Calgary was suffering from end stage kidney disease as well as there being evidence of potential cancer, Lipanovich stated in the news release.
