The Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes in partnership with the Geneva Historical Society, will present the virtual program, “The Shakers in Western New York” by Peter Wisbey on Thursday, May 27 at 7 p.m.
Join Genesee Country Village & Museum curator of collections Peter Wisbey as he discusses the popularity of the United Society of Believers – the Shakers – and their New York communities at Sodus and Groveland. Wisbey will also highlight the dismantling, movement and restoration of the Groveland Trustees’ Building to GCVM in 1987.
Peter Wisbey has been curator of collections for Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford for over 14 years. He was previously the executive director of the Seward House in Auburn and held curatorial positions in Massachusetts and New Jersey.

CARE United Society Johor Baru is glad that its retail gallery is open once again under the conditional movement control order.
The space sells handicraft items made by the Iban and Penan from Sarawak as well as the Mah Meri of Pulau Carey, Selangor.
Founding president Datuk Florence Goh (
pic) said the outlet located in Taman Molek had to be closed on Jan 13 when the movement control order was imposed and could only reopen during the second week of Chinese New Year.

Nature, Light, and the Shaker Divine
QUITE EARLY THE OTHER MORNING, before it was light I had been awake for some time already, thinking about an essay I was working on about Shaker architecture one of the motion lights in the driveway came on, probably from a branch tossing in the wind. You will remember how your mother installed those lights at the behest of the insurance company some years ago, as a deterrent against any burglars who might happen up the long driveway at night when nobody is here or, for that matter, when they are. (It seemed funny at the time, and still does, that a burglar would have any interest in an upstate New York farmhouse whose only contents are ladybugs and books from the 1940s. There is nothing here to steal; even the copper pipes have been replaced with plastic.) NEW GLOUCESTER Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Monday, April 12, will present a live discussion and audience Q&A with Lois Lowry and Brother Arnold Hadd, who will discuss “Like the Willow Tree” – Lowry’s historical fiction book set at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village.
