IOM Calls for Accelerated Action on Environmental Migration at 2021 International Dialogue on Migration

IOM will take place virtually between 25 and 27 May 2021 from 9:00 to 12:00 EST. Building on the 2008 and 2011 IDM meetings, this session focuses on “Accelerating integrated action on sustainable development: migration, the environment and climate change”. This comes at a time of increasing political urgency, and in view of the deep impacts of the COVID-19 health crisis linking climate and migration to current and future development issues. Environmental change and disasters have always been major drivers of migration. However, climate change predictions for the 21st century indicate that even more people are expected to be on the move. Extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and storms, become more frequent and intense, and changes in precipitation and temperature patterns impact livelihoods and human security.

International Dialogue on Migration 2020 COVID-19 crisis: Reimagining the role of migrants and human mobility for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 15 and 16 October 2020 This year, the International Dialogue on Migration (IDM) will host its 20th edition. Since 2001, IDM has provided a multitude of stakeholders worldwide with a platform for timely debates on a full range of migration issues, while retaining strong linkages with other overlapping policy domains. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought enormous challenges to the global health, social, political and economic systems and will have immediate consequences on the attainment of many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Cognizant of the need for strengthened international commitment and cooperation to respond to these pressing challenges, the IDM convened whole societies, public, private and civic sectors to promote discussions on the implications of the pandemic for migrants, migration and mobility as
