US offers minimal legal protection for migrant children, study finds

USA TODAY Unlike almost three-quarters of high-income countries, the U.S. does not prohibit or limit the detention of accompanied asylum-seeking children, a study released Wednesday finds. The study by the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health s WORLD Policy Analysis Center looked specifically at laws affecting asylum-seeking children – youths seeking protection from human rights violations in their home country – and migrant children – youths leaving their country for a variety of reasons, such as economic opportunities, education or to join family. According to the study s findings, the U.S. does not have legislation protecting accompanied migrant children.  “The U.S. lags behind when it comes to protecting the most fundamental rights of migrant children,” said Dr. Jody Heymann, director of WORLD and a professor at UCLA. Senate bill seeking procurement preference for green products to help meet SDGs

January 17, 2021 | 6:40 pm Font Size AAA A MEASURE that will establish procurement preferences for sustainable products has been filed in the Senate, with its proponents saying it will help the Philippines achieve its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Senate Bill No. 1895, the proposed “Green Public Procurement (GPP) Act,” will establish a GPP program in all government agencies, leading to the procurement of more goods with reduced environmental impact. “This proposed measure seeks to establish the government as a principal catalyst in shaping sustainable practices and industries in the country by incorporating the factor of environmental impact in its procurement policies,” according to the bill’s explanatory note.
