of LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 4, 2021) UK HealthCare will begin the programming and design of a new outpatient cancer treatment center and advanced ambulatory complex that also will include other ambulatory services. The design phase of the capital project was approved by the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees’ health care committee on Monday and pending approval by the full Board on Tuesday. The new complex with an estimated 260,000 square feet for cancer services  may include multiple buildings but will primarily allow for the needed expansion of patient care services and increased ease of access for the UK Markey Cancer Center. As the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated center in Kentucky, Markey is able to offer cutting-edge and early phase therapies not available to patients being treated anywhere else in Kentucky.

UK Study Shows Increased Financial Burden Linked to Decreased Health Insurance Literacy

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 27, 2021) – A recent study by University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center researchers looked into the association of financial burden with health insurance literacy in colorectal cancer patients. Recently published in Supportive Care in Cancer, the team utilized the Kentucky Cancer Registry data to collect surveys from colorectal cancer survivors in Kentucky to identify if there was a correlation between individuals suffering from financial toxicity and comprehension of health insurance. Financial toxicity is the accumulation of the financial costs and financial distress or hardship that can affect the health and wellbeing of cancer survivors. Studies cited in the article highlight how survivors suffering from financial toxicity had a poorer quality of life, decreased survival, increased symptom burden, and a decrease in treatment compliance.
