My name is greg berrios. Im a former book editor of the san Antonio Express news. I worked for many years in los angeles for the Los Angeles Times. Ive written for the new york times. Currently i write for the los angeles review of books and im on the board of directors of the National Book critics circle. Im also the author of a book of poetry that deals with lacausa. In fact, its called, lacausa. At this time i would like to introduce miriam. Miriam is the former Pulitzer Prize winning editor who spent 25 years working at newsday and the Los Angeles Times. Captions Copyright National cable satellite corp. 2008 he goes to san jose state, becomes a promising playwright, working with the San Francisco troupe in 1965 when the strike starts and part of a sort of radical group in the San Francisco bay area, and thats an important part of the story too i think because, again, things didnt happen in a vacuum. It was the Civil Rights Movement was very strong and a lot of the real early support that made the union successful came out of that San Francisco area. He has to decide, hes 25, his play about to be produced off broadway and does he go to new york or back to delano to help the farm workers. He goes back, he tells caesar he wants to start a theater for farm workers and he says we dont have any money, actor, anything, sure, go ahead if you want. [applause] nationala directed the boycott during the National Grape strike. She has been involved in the fight since 1955. She has been arrested more than 20 times for leading nonviolent protests. Named one of the most important women of the 20th oftury, and has dozens really important awards, including the Eleanor Roosevelt award for human rights, which was bestowed on her by president clinton, and the president ial medal of freedom by president obama. [applause] her is miriam powell, a hasnalist, author who researched the united farm workers and cesar chavez. Her recent work won the Robert F Kennedy prize, and was a finalist for the National Critics circle. As a journalist, she has spent 25 years as an awardwinn
Black people were entitled to the same rights at the restaurant counters, jobs, housing or whatever it was not because the government was going to give it to them but because they enjoyed the same rights as every human being. Guest government had to enforce equal treatment not segregation so it was an important tool. Host and i am not throwing the baby out with the bath wart. There is a reason for government. Government needs to restrain the sinful people who will not be constrained from within a higher power. Government is an established institution but it has limitati limitations. The founders wanted the government to be restrained so the people would be unlimited. That is why it starts we the people not we the government. Thank you for coming in.
