Håfa Adai! On Jan. 9, the State Department announced it had loosened restrictions on formal communications between the federal government and Taiwan.
This could be a timely blessing for Guam’s economy, including our visitor industry, which has been essentially shut down for the last 10 months.
Guam expects to begin welcoming tourist arrivals from primary markets in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan toward the end of March, a full year after the novel coronavirus closed businesses and stopped tourism cold in its tracks.
Knowing that our visitor industry is not expected to regain peak capacity until 2024, Guam has little choice but to diversify toward higher-yield travelers and expand the broader economy into the sustainable development of other lucrative industries from aquaculture to high-speed service industry technology.
