Unite calls for probe into company boss over unpaid furlough payments

A PROBE into a company boss was demanded by Unite today after he allegedly claimed Covid-19 furlough payments for his workforce without passing them on. The union said that Nicolas Marks, boss of Preston-based caravan builder Lunar Automotive, owes workers £170,000 and has forced them to use foodbanks to survive during the pandemic. Unite wants HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to investigate the “elusive” boss over the missing money. The union said today that Mr Marks had “gone to ground” and that Unite had 27 outstanding employment tribunal claims against the company, including breach of contract and unlawful deduction of wages. Unite understands that the company was evicted from its Preston site for failing to meet its commitments to the landlord and has now decamped to Blackpool 14 miles away.

The Democrats secret weapon to help win the Senate: UNITE HEREs 1,000 union canvassers

76% of the voters UNITE HERE identified were Black; 87% were people of color . A relic of Jim Crow-era policies aimed at diluting the influence of Black voters, Georgia’s runoff elections have historically favored Republicans. Democrats have struggled in previous Georgia runoffs to maintain participation among Black voters and other voters of color critical to their success. Members of UNITE HERE supercharged a program to reach those voters directly by mounting the largest door-to-door canvassing operation in its history, becoming a central figure in the multi-racial statewide effort that delivered the win for Democrats by hitting 9 million doors altogether. In conversations with voters, UNITE HERE canvassers stressed the urgent need to take back the Senate. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, workers across Georgia have dealt with unprecedented job losses, a government response that has been “too little, too late,” and loss of employer-provided healthcare.
