Grey squirrels, which were first introduced to Ireland in 1911, became a pest to the native red squirrel here, transmitting disease and ultimately threatening its survival. The red squirrel population here decreased dramatically but now, the tide has turned, with another animal playing a vital role, the pine martin. You may spot both creatures when out walking in local woodlands, including Union Wood, and various more. A study has been carried out into an extensive oak woodland that has been central to the thriving red squirrel population there. The 2,000-acre estate at Crom, on the shores of Lough Erne in County Fermanagh features the largest surviving area of oak woodland in Northern Ireland and a protected nature reserve. Home to a wealth of wildlife it remains one of only a few places in the country where the native red squirrel continues to thrive.
