Leh: Lieutenant Governor R K Mathur on Wednesday chaired the first meeting of the Ladakh disaster management authority and stressed on the need to station helicopters in the Union Territory for relief, rescue and evacuation during a calamity.
“The Union Territory of Ladakh on Wednesday held the first meeting of its disaster management authority under the chairmanship of the Lt Governor,” an official spokesman said.
Mathur also said helipads should be upgraded to handle bigger aircraft such as the Mi-17 and the Chinook, and added that there should be additional airstrips for relief, rescue and evacuation purposes.

A police official said there was no report of damage from anywhere.
“The earthquake was probably of low intensity and did not cause panic,” he said.
The MET Department official said the tremor was felt at 7.59 pm.
The earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometer and the epicentre was at latitude 34.33 degrees north and longitude 78.30 degrees east, he said.

Leh (Ladakh) [India], January 1 (ANI): A total of 19 new COVID-19 cases and 12 discharges were reported from the Union Territory of Ladakh on Thursday.
A total of 19 new COVID-19 cases and 12 discharges were reported from the Union Territory of Ladakh on Thursday. Department of Information and Public Relations, Ladakh reported that 12 out of 19 positive samples were received by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Leh while 2 positive samples were received by CMO Kargil. All the 12 patients were discharged by CMO Leh. The total number of active COVID-19 cases now stands at 196 in Union Territory of Ladakh. Out of these 185 are active in Leh district and 11 are active in Kargil district. The total number of confirmed positive cases in Leh is 9466, while cured cases are 9143. This takes the recovery rate of Ladakh to 97 per cent.

NEW DELHI: A meteorological centre was inaugurated in the Union Territory of Ladakh on Tuesday which would provide localised weather forecasts thus strengthening weather-related early warning system for the region.
At 3,500 metres, this meteorological centre is the highest such facility in India, Union Earth Sciences Minister Harsh Vardhan said at the inauguration of the facility.
He said it will provide short range (three days,) medium range (12 days) and long range (one month) forecast for the two districts Leh and Kargil of the Union Territory.
