Brevard College is the only higher education institution in the Asheville area that will require the COVID-19 vaccination for all staff and students this fall.
With a fully vaccinated on-campus population, the liberal arts school with a student body of about 700 will no longer require masks or social distancing during the fall semester.
“We decided to require the vaccine because we wanted to be able to provide our students with the experience that sold them on Brevard to begin with, and that’s an in-person, without masks, without social distancing experience,” said Debbie D Anna, Brevard College vice president for student success and dean of students. “The only way to ensure that we are able to do that is to require vaccines.”

Ranching couple describe miracle birth of triplet Angus calves
“Just a triple miracle.”
That’s how Pam Jenkins described the April 13 births of triplet calves from a two-year-old Angus cow named Jackie.
Jackie is part of Pam and Charles Jenkins’ herd at their ranch between Early and Zephyr, and she gave birth to the three calves Huey (male), Luey (female) and Suey (female) after being bred for the first time.
The three calves and their mama are doing well after dicey births that could have killed all four animals, Pam and Charles said while introducing the young family to a visitor.

One of the oldest homes in Northside is no more.
The 1800s-era Westwood house, also known as McGuire Cottage, was demolished this week at the behest of Union Presbyterian Seminary.
It owns the so-called Westwood Tract where the structure had stood for two centuries dwarfed in recent years by the newly built Canopy at Ginter Park apartments.
Seminary spokesman Mike Frontiero said its board of trustees voted last year to demolish the structure, originally the home of Confederate surgeon Hunter Holmes McGuire, “as recognition of and in repentance for the resourcing provided to the seminary through the labor of enslaved persons.”
