A Central Ohio school district advised parents Tuesday morning that its board voted to make face masks optional.
The North Union Local School District Board of Education in Union County approved a motion to make facial coverings voluntary effective immediately. The district superintendent sent out a message to parents around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
The move concerns Ohio Education Association President Scott DiMauro, who notes that the state and CDC recommend schools enforce masks at least through the end of the school year.
“We know that as more people get vaccinated that is putting us in a better position in terms of health and safety,” DiMauro said. “But we still have the vast majority of our students who have not been vaccinated yet.”

MORRISTOWN The challenges of conducting education remotely featured in Thursday’s meeting of the Union Local School District Board of Education.
The board started the meeting with a moment of silence in honor or former Belmont mayor Stan Sobel, who died Tuesday. Sobel had been a past board member and had been a longtime science teacher at Union Local High School.
Once the meeting was underway, Superintendent Ben Porter said students and staff continue to cope with the remote learning during the surge of COVID-19 cases.
“It’s not perfect, but we have gotten a lot better than where we were in springtime with remote education,” he said, adding Union Local, like other school districts, prepared during summer for the current school year with the expectation that cases would increase during winter.
