when we had the anthrax scare here in new york city. the nypd had hammer teams that went to different locations. coupled with the fbi joint terrorist task force. and the third, and i want to say the most significant piece, is the unibomber, ted kaczynski. those three components are going to triangulate and we re going to focus on this particular investigation moving forward. josh, you were formerly with the fbi. right now what stands out to you about what we have seen take place here? well, so there are two aspects. there s obviously the forensic commonalities we ve been talk ig about that a number of devices all have the same construction, the same make kbruup. obviously, we re dealing with the same person or group of people that are constructing them but also as investigators try to get into the mind yn sse this person or group of people are still at large, they have not been caught. investigators are essentially racing against the clock to determine who these people are, to get
can you just explain the difficulty investigations like this can be, how long they can take, or sort of what s happening right now? well, i mean, they can take time. i remember back in 2002 during the d.c. sniper which ironically was october of 2002. right around this time of year. it does take time. but there s an awful lot of pressure to find out very quickly or at least as quickly as possible who s responsible so that you don t wind up in this case with anyone actually being killed because right now we re very fortunate. they found so far six devices, i believe. none of which went off. that doesn t mean there are not more out there. so there s a tremendous amount of pressure to make sure that they identify this person as quickly as possible. mary ellen, you profiled the unibomber, ted kaczynski. looking at how this individual or individuals sent these packages, is there anything you can tell in terms of what kind of a person it could be behind this? well, it would all be very
that could function i think it was designed more than anything to strike fear in the hearts of those people who they were intended to target. not necessarily to kill them. laura: professor, back to you, tracing the individual they believe an individual ishe responsible for this. tracing the materials back to the individual itt was so hard n the case of the uni bomber huge damage, horrific damage. it took years and years. why might this be different? the uni bomber took years and years because his bombings were out over years and he actually had a hiatus from bombing for a number of years if you remember that case. he was quite an experimental list. this particular person or group has been linked 2007 bombs in
security cameras and the actual individual materials? i think what you have is security protocol many times when you have a commercial operation like cnn they are going to have a high ridge of security protocol. andot george soros would have hh security protocol. the digital footprint is so much more pronounced today than it was when the uni bomber was acting. our bomb techs have gotten so much better in the technical exploitation of intelligence so we ve seench over the last sevel years almost two decades that we ve been engaged in counter id operations it has improved dramatically so t we can quickly identify the perpetrators and
and i would have said then yes. the only difference between now and monday morning is that we ve seen that someone has acted on it. and i know i m supposed to say that we don t know who it is, we don t know why they did it well, we don t. we don t, we don t. and you have people like nick ras mussen this isn t john hinkleyo the uni bomber. this is someone who has weaponized trump s twitter feed and made it into a hit list. and even if you want to give him the benefit of the doubt, we just saw him at this rally. even if he tones it down tonight, which i doubt he will, he ll resume tomorrow. but what we ve seen to date is someone who whips up the crowd. he is addicted to their response and they are addicted to his vitriol.
