Troops rescue 39 Islamiya children, recover 8 rustled cattle in Katsina

By Tobias Lengnan Dapam The Nigerian military said its troops of Operation HADARIN DAJI in conjunction with Police and local vigilante deployed at Dandume LGA of Katsina State, have rescued 39 kidnapped girls and rescued 8 rustled cattle. The military in a statement issued on Sunday, by Major General, John Enenche, Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Defence Headquarters, said the troops received a distress call at about 11:30 PM on 19 December 2020 from locals at Mahuta village that suspected bandits were moving with unconfirmed numbers of Islamiya children mostly girls and rustled cattle. He said the report indicated that the children were returning from Maulud programme at Unguwar Al- Kasim village at Dandume.

The Street Journal had earlier reported that armed men, at about 11:00 pm on Saturday night, intercepted Islamic school children returning from a Maulud Nabiyyi (Prophet Mohammad’s birthday) celebration in Unguwar Al-Kasim and abducted many of them in Mahuta B Ward in Dandume Local Government Area of the state. Confirming the rescue of the 84 children and 12 cows, Isah Gambo, Katsina State Police Command Spokesperson, said:

Information from the area revealed that the students (Islammiyya students) numbering over hundred attend Maulud celebration in a neighbouring village, Unguwar Al-Kasim, and were on their way home, Mahuta village, when the incident happened. A source in the area, Sagir Dandume said his younger sister, was among the Islammiyya students kidnapped by the bandits but have since regained freedom.

Gunmen abduct Islamic school students in Katsina

x The school, also referred to as Makarantan Islamiyya in local parlance, had held a maulud procession at Unguwar Al-Kasim, a neighbouring village, and the students were on their way home when they were kidnapped. A local online newspaper, Katsina Post as well as sources familiar with the incident, confirmed the development early Sunday morning. It was learnt that vigilante groups and other sympathisers in the area, have since commenced rescue operations, even as the number of abducted students is said to be on the high side. The incident comes on the heels of the abduction of some 344 students of Government Science Secondary School (GSSS) Kankara last week Friday.
