Centres collaborating with UNEP

UN Environment Programme (UNEP) collaborates with a growing network of centres to complement and leverage its expertise, and improve the overall delivery of the organization’s work. Activities include delivery of projects, mobilization of resources, activities within their specialised areas and the expansion of UNEP´s advocacy role.

The world is facing a triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has been a leading advocate for the environment and a trusted partner for over 50 years, providing science-based advice to policymakers and decision-makers to support action on environmental challenges. This booklet presents an overview of UNEP – its mission, vision, strategy and action for tackling the triple planetary crisis. It chronicles environmental highlights from the past five decades, shows how UNEP works in partnerships, and explains why it is crucial that funding provided to UNEP keeps pace with the growing expectations placed on the organization to deliver results in support of people and planet. It also gives evidence of UNEP being a trusted and relevant partner on the journey towards planetary sustainability. It is also an invitation to partners to share the journey.

Stockholm+50 Report

The international meeting “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity” was held in Stockholm on 2 and 3 June 2022, pursuant to General Assembly resolutions 75/280 and 75/326. During that period, four plenary meetings and three leadership dialogues were held. At the opening segment of the international meeting, a commemorative moment dedicated to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm from 5 to 16 June 1972, was observed, in which His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden participated.

Get Involved - International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) observed for the third time on 29 September 2022 will make a clear call to action for public and private entities, from across the food system, and consumers, to work together to cut food loss and waste to enhance the efficient use of natural resources, mitigate climate change, and support food security and nutrition. The Get Involved Guide offers a range of key messages, facts and figures as well as areas of actions that stakeholders can take to reduce food loss and waste.

United Nations Environment Assembly 5 (UNEA 5 2) Resolutions

The 5th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2) took place in Nairobi, Kenya,  from 28 February to 2 March 2022, concluding with 14 key resolutions geared towards halting the progression of the triple planetary crisis. The resolutions aim to strengthen actions for nature and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Resolution 1: Animal Welfare, Environment, and Sustainable Development Nexus Resolution 1 requests, in due time, a report, gathering partners and stakeholders to work together in identifying the interlinkages between health and welfare of animals, sustainable development and the environment, to human health and well-being. Resolution 2: Sustainable Nitrogen Management Resolution 2 encourages UN Member States to accelerate their action in the significant reduction of nitrogen waste by 2030, with national action plans supported by UNEP.
