Express View: While unemployment rates have declined across board, rise in self-employment reinforces concerns that the economy is unable to generate sufficient employment to absorb the millions entering the labour force each year
Unemployment rate had shot up sharply during the lockdown imposed in 2020 during the first wave of the pandemic. The unemployment rate for urban females and males in 15-29 years age group stood at 36 per cent and 34.3 per cent, respectively, in April-June 2020.
Also, there has been an upward trend in intergenerational mobility, but the trend has been weaker for workers belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes categories as compared to workers belonging to general castes.
