and i m not convinced it will happen, i think there would be certainly would be attempts made. i mean, how many votes are we up to? 50 votes to repeal it? but i would hope that they would see the value that millions of americans are seeing. actually seeing not just 6 million people coffvered, but a lot of protection in place for people who already had coverage. until a couple of years ago, the insurance companies had awesome power over people s health care and even their lives in some circumstances. it was only a couple years ago where children with preexisting condition who had parents paying their premiums and could not get coverage for that child. so tremendous advancements and i would hope republicans would see the value to families and see the value to better health care. and the provisions that over time are beginning to reduce cost. i want to switch gears to something i know very important to you. this week, the senate will begin debating the unemployment benefits extension.
insurance, we have to raise the minimum wage. we have to do these other things to help people feel better about the job market in the naerm. the job picture is improving but not enough that the white house will abandon some of their major, you know their marriage priorities for the year in terms of job including the unemployment benefits extension and raising the minimum wage. can i mention a couple of statistics. i don t want to accentuate the negative too much either. a couple of statistics to be worried about, christine. one is if you look at the long term unemployed. still too high. those are people unemployed for more than 26 weeks. second of all, if you look at what happened with hours worked that actually declined. that s troubling. as the economy picks up and as people as employers start hiring more workers you expect the number of hours worked nobody creation. they decreased. one other final statistic, there are 2 million fewer people in
and looking toward the next 24 hours, chris, there s going to be a vote very shortly on temporary unemployment benefits extension. any whip count on that, how it s expected to go? andrea, look. things change, obviously. but as sort of noon today, it seemed as though this would not get the necessary votes to break the threat of a filibuster and therefore we would not have a deal. again, this is something that s been worked on for the last month or so, and it does not look at least at the moment, as though we are expecting this to be sort of the deal that we ve been waiting to see if congress can find. and the jobs report tomorrow plus the signing of the farm bill in michigan by the president tomorrow. john kerry has tweeted out a picture. tonight he s going to hit the ice and do a ceremonial dropping of the puck wearing team usa garb. sending off our olympic hockey
and helps grow the economy. and i think more and more republicans are understanding that as they begin to look at this vote again. and as we continue this debate. it s going to take a lot of public pressure. it s going to take a lot of education. but i m still hopeful as a result. i m looking at this, joan, and i m looking at a pattern here. on morning joe this morning, somebody was saying, maybe it was joe, that nobody is going to vote differently based on unemployment benefits extension. but if you add it up, this is one strike. if you bring in the fact that republicans have cut food stamps, opposing medicare extension to people that are working but are very poor, opposing minimum wage increases. head start. head start. one thing after another, it s going to get back to the 1% versus the 47%. emphasizing double downing on that problem they ve always had which they don t look like they give a damn about regular people. and there are a lot more regular people than there are 1%er.
